With the start of classes around the corner, many Peace Region parents are feeling the pinch from rising school supplies prices.

A new survey from Rakuten shows that 73 percent of parents go over budget when back-to-school shopping. According to the survey, 76 percent of parents put the blame on inflation for overspending.

Statistics Canada said stationery supplies, like pencils and paper, are up 3 percent year over year.

The agency noted that stationery items are not affected by Canada’s counter tariffs of 25 percent on certain U.S. goods.

Despite the overall increase, some parents have found ways to stay on budget.

One Dawson Creek parent said she goes through her children’s old supplies, like binders, to see what she doesn’t need to buy. Others said they compare prices at different retailers to find the best deals.

At Walmart in Dawson Creek, a pack of 10 pencils is on sale for $1, while at the Dawson Creek Dollarama, a pack of 12 pencils costs $2.

Crayola coloured pencils are $2.34 at Walmart. However, off-brand coloured pencils are $1.50 at Dollarama.

A large glue stick is slightly more expensive at Walmart, but Dollarama has the best deals on erasers.

Binders are similarly priced at both stores, starting at about $1.50.

Some schools offer packages with basic school supplies. Tremblay Elementary in Dawson Creek offers a supply pack for $35 but also suggests a list of extra items to buy.

The school recommends parents to consider bringing a backpack, inside and outside footwear, a reusable water bottle, and some extra clothing.

On the bright side, Statistics Canada said prices for children’s clothing are running below the rate of inflation this year.

Another way to save money is to wait until classes begin, when retailers often discount extra inventory in September Sales.
