As the May long weekend gets underway, police are reminding people across northeastern B.C. to stay safe, both on the road and at campsites.
Dawson Creek RCMP say the Victoria Day long weekend is typically a busy time, with many Peace Region residents heading out of town for camping trips or visiting friends and family.
Mounties note that a significant number of calls for service during the holiday weekend are linked to alcohol.
Officers are urging drivers to plan ahead and avoid getting behind the wheel while impaired.
Police are also asking that if you see someone operating any kind of vehicle under the influence, contact your nearest RCMP detachment.
With increased traffic expected on highways throughout the Peace Region, drivers are reminded to wear seatbelts, obey posted speed limits and to remain patient, especially on busy routes leading to popular camping areas.
RCMP say taking simple precautions can help ensure a safe and enjoyable long weekend for everyone heading out to take advantage of the unofficial start to summer.
