Parents at a Dawson Creek elementary school fundraise for inclusive playground

A group of parents at Crescent Park Elementary in Dawson Creek are fundraising to add an inclusive playground to the schoolyard.

The Parent Advisory Council (PAC) says it is committed to build a playground that welcomes children of all abilities.

“We believe every child deserves a safe and inclusive place to play, learn, and grow,” said PAC President Kaitlin Sevier in a letter requesting donations.

The PAC says the school’s current playgrounds use pea gravel as ground cover, adding it poses safety concerns.

The council says one student has been ingesting the gravel and has become ill.

“To ensure safety and accessibility, we urgently need to offer a safe playground with rubber pour ground and install equipment designed for children with diverse needs,” the letter reads.

The PAC is aiming to raise $200,000, the approximate cost of other similar recent projects in the region.

The council will be hosting a silent auction on Facebook between May 24 and 30, and is asking for any contribution before or during the auction.

Residents can donate items or services for auction, or bid on over 130 items already contributed by community members. All funds will go toward the project.

“Your generous contribution would not only help us move closer to this important goal, but it would also demonstrate your commitment to fostering a strong, inclusive community,” the letter says.

In addition to the silent auction, the PAC is also fundraising through other initiatives, such as Art by Kids and West Coast Kids. The group is also exploring grant opportunities to help achieve the ambitious goal.

“Together, we can create a playground where every child belongs,” the letter says.
