FORT NELSON, B.C. - The federal government is investing more than half a million dollars in safety upgrades at the Northern Rockies Regional Airport in Fort Nelson.
It is part of a larger funding announcement aimed at strengthening regional air transportation infrastructure across British Columbia.
The Northern Rockies Regional Airport will receive $552,600 through the Airports Capital Assistance Program to replace its runway approach lighting system.
The project is intended to improve airport safety and reliability for passengers, air operators and the communities that depend on the facility.
The Fort Nelson project is one of six airport infrastructure upgrades being funded in B.C., with the federal government announcing a total investment of more than $23.5 million.
Other projects include runway, drainage, electrical and lighting improvements at airports in Prince Rupert, Masset, Smithers, Bella Coola and Kamloops.
Transport Canada says regional airports play a critical role in connecting rural and remote communities, providing access to health care, emergency response services, business opportunities and essential travel.
The department says the upgrades will help ensure airports continue to provide safe and efficient service while reducing maintenance costs and improving long-term operational reliability.
Steven MacKinnon, Canada’s Minister of Transport and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, said local and regional airports are “lifelines” for many communities across British Columbia.
MacKinnon said the investments will help maintain safe and efficient operations while strengthening transportation links that connect British Columbians to jobs, services and the rest of the country.
