After receiving backlash over reduced after-hours coverage at the Tumbler Ridge Health Centre Emergency Department, Northern Health hosted an open house to gather community feedback.

The open house took place at the Tumbler Ridge Community Centre on Sunday from 11 am to noon.

Last week, Northern Health announced a reduction in after-hours on-call services, leaving Tumbler Ridge without in-town emergency care late at night or on weekends.

“More than 250 people attended the meeting, and they expressed a lot of outrage,” said Peace Region MLA Larry Neufeld.

Neufeld said residents raised concerns about the ability to save lives during periods without coverage.

Outside on-call hours, residents must dial 911 to be assessed by paramedics and transported to the nearest available facility in another community.

The MLA said there are concerns about the travel distance to Dawson Creek in life-threatening emergencies.

“I won’t accept any reductions, and I’m very hopeful this will only be a temporary closure,” added Neufeld.

He noted the changes are still temporary, but Northern Health is feeling pressure from residents.

Northern Health announced a second meeting on September 11 for those unable to attend the first.
