Northern B.C. sees 58 impaired driving prohibitions during summer crackdown

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. - BC Highway Patrol says officers in Northern B.C. issued 58 impaired driving prohibitions during this year’s Summer Impaired Driving Campaign, with three of those linked to drug impairment.

The provincial enforcement campaign ran from June 15 to July 31, 2026, targeting impaired drivers through check stops and roadside enforcement across British Columbia.

According to BC Highway Patrol, Northern B.C., which includes most communities north of 100 Mile House, recorded the second-highest number of impaired driving prohibitions among the province’s regions during the six-week campaign.

Provincewide, officers issued 229 impaired driving prohibitions and 18 drug-related prohibitions. The South Coast region accounted for the largest share with 97 prohibitions, followed by Northern B.C. with 58.

At first glance, the numbers appear significantly lower than last year, when 626 impaired driving prohibitions were issued across B.C. during the summer campaign. However, BC Highway Patrol says the comparison is affected by a shorter enforcement period and staffing redeployments in 2026.

“This year’s Summer Impaired Driving Campaign was only six weeks compared to ten weeks last year,” said Lori Orstad, Superintendent with BC Highway Patrol. “Our officers did notice improvements in some of our usual check stops in 2026, but we are intercepting far too many people who choose to drive while impaired.”

In 2025, Northern B.C. recorded 146 impaired driving prohibitions and 13 drug-related prohibitions during a longer campaign that ran from June 15 to August 31.

Despite the lower numbers this year, police say impaired driving remains a serious concern on B.C. roads.
