Fort St. John city council has granted a break in property taxes to North Peace Search and Rescue.

The group will not have to pay property taxes while operating in a city-owned building.

Search and Rescue signed a five-year lease at a location on 100 Avenue. The exemption would apply when the lease begins in 2027.

The city says Search and Rescue is seen as a critical public safety partner, and paying property taxes would put a significant strain on the organization.

The city says the exemption is a common tool used to give back to organizations making a difference in the community.

The North Peace Cultural Society is under a similar agreement.
