FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. - The North Peace Community Foundation is celebrating a major funding milestone after PETRONAS Canada fulfilled its $500,000 commitment to the PETRONAS Sustainable Community Fund, a contribution expected to support local charities and non-profit organizations for generations to come.

The commitment was first announced in 2022 and has now been fully realized, creating a permanent endowment fund that will continue generating grant money throughout the North Peace and Northern Rockies regions.

The endowment currently generates about $25,000 annually for community projects through the North Peace Community Foundation’s Strong Roots Granting Program, with the amount expected to grow over time as the fund earns investment returns.

Applications for the current grant intake are being accepted until October 31.

“This milestone reflects a shared commitment to investing in the future of our communities,” said Tracey Wolsey, chair of the North Peace Community Foundation board.

Wolsey said the fund creates a lasting legacy by ensuring local organizations have access to resources for years to come.

PETRONAS Canada says the fund was designed to create long-term benefits for communities in the region.

“At PETRONAS Canada, we believe strong communities are built through long-term partnerships and investments that create lasting impact,” said Shannon Young, the company’s General Counsel and Vice President of External Affairs.

Young said the endowment model allows funding to support current community priorities while also preserving resources for future needs.

The North Peace Community Foundation recognized PETRONAS Canada as a founding member of the organization and said the fund helps create a permanent source of community investment across the region.
