The BC Centre for Disease Control confirmed 14 new measles cases across the province since Tuesday, bring the total to 63.
It says most of the cases are coming from the Northern Health region. In fact, there is now 41 cases in the Northeast. That’s eight more than it was reported two days ago.
The Northern Health total is considered an undercount, because “some communities have a large disease burden, and not everyone is presenting to Northern Health for diagnosis and health care support,” according to the BCCDC.
The update also comes with multiple new public exposure notices. Health officials are advising people to seek medical attention if they were at the North Peace Regional Airport in the Fort St. John on Monday from 10 am to 2:30pm.
Those who travelled on WestJet flight WS320 from Fort St. John to Vancouver, that departed at 12:44 pm on Monday are also being advised of a possible exposure to the highly contagious disease.
Total measles cases reported by B.C. in 2025: 63
By regional health authority:
- Northern Health: 41
- Vancouver Coastal Health: 8
- Fraser Health: 7
- Interior Health: 5
- Island Health: 2
The BC CDC reported five new cases in Interior Health and two new cases in Island Health, two regions that had no cases on Tuesday. There are no new cases for the Vancouver Costal Health and Fraser Health regions.
Symptoms:
- Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose, and red and inflamed eyes that are often sensitive to light. These symptoms are followed by a rash, which starts first on the face and neck, and spreads to the chest, arms and legs. The rash lasts about 4 to 7 days. There may also be small white spots inside the mouth.
- Symptoms can start between 7 and 21 days after a person is infected with the measles virus.
- Measles is a serious illness that can also lead to complications including pneumonia, encephalitis (swelling of the brain), and even death.
Those who have been exposed to the measles are being asked to stay home and self-isolate for at least four days after a rash first appears.
Medical experts say the best way to protect yourself if you have been exposed to measles is to get vaccinated with the MMR vaccine. You can contact your local health unit to schedule a measles vaccination appointment.
