‘Lock your doors’ Vehicle theft continues to rise in Fort St. John

A rash of thefts in a Kitchener neighbourhood has prompted homeowners to install cameras.

Vehicle thefts in Fort St. John continuing to rise, according to police. The trend has been increasing over the past year and it seems some people are still not getting the message, when it comes to locking their vehicles.

Vehicle theft is up slightly in August compared to the previous month. There were 14 thefts in August, an increase of one from July.

The largest increase of theft involves pick-up trucks over $5000. That number has doubled from four in July, to eight so far this month.

But the biggest increase is in the year-to-year statistics. This August has seen almost three times the amount of vehicle thefts compared to the same month last year.

Constable Chad Neustaeter, the Media Relations Officer with the Fort St John RCMP said, these crimes of opportunity can often be prevented, if vehicle owners locked their doors.

Neustaeter said, “It is important that you lock your doors, remove all valuables and park in a well-lit area at night.”
