DAWSON CREEK, B.C. - Residents will have an opportunity to come together to remember lives lost to substance use and learn more about local supports, during an upcoming International Overdose Awareness Day event in Dawson Creek.
The gathering is being held in recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day and aims to honour those who have died from substance use, support those affected, and raise awareness about overdose prevention.
The event will feature a variety of activities and community resources, including live music from Worth Every Penny, local vendors and community groups, a free barbecue, guest speakers, and memorial services for individuals lost to substance use.
Organizers say attendees will also be able to take part in crafts focused on healing and community connection, while a resource fair will connect people with local services and provide naloxone training.
A handcrafted memorial plaque created by Oscar Dumais will also be unveiled and dedicated to remembering and honouring the lives lost to substance use.
The event will take place on Friday, August 28 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Nawican Bergeron Youth & Cultural Centre, located at 10200 17th Street.
International Overdose Awareness Day is observed each year to recognize the impact of overdose deaths, reduce stigma associated with substance use, and encourage conversations about prevention, treatment, and recovery.
