FORT NELSON, B.C. — Residents of Fort Nelson and surrounding Northern Rockies communities now have a new option for travelling to specialist medical appointments outside the region.
Hope Air has expanded its Volunteer Pilot Program to include Fort Nelson, offering eligible patients free flights to access medical care in larger centres such as Prince George, Edmonton and Calgary.
The service is designed to help reduce travel barriers for patients who need to leave the Northern Rockies for specialist appointments covered under provincial health plans.
Eligible travellers can be connected with volunteer pilots who donate their time and use private aircraft to transport patients to and from medical appointments
The expansion marks a significant increase in transportation options for residents of Northeast B.C., where long distances and limited transportation choices can make accessing specialized medical care challenging.
Hope Air says the Volunteer Pilot Program operates seasonally from April through October, depending on weather conditions.
Patients must be deemed suitable for travel in a smaller aircraft and applications are reviewed by the organization.
If a volunteer pilot is not available, Hope Air says alternate commercial travel arrangements may be considered. The program can also help support return trips home following hospital stays.
To qualify, patients must already have a specialist medical appointment booked, hold a valid provincial health card and be travelling to a medical service covered by a provincial health plan.
Applications can be submitted directly through Hope Air, with patients asked to provide appointment information, travel dates, identification details and household income information as part of the process.
The organization says the expanded service aims to improve access to care and reduce the burden of medical travel for residents of the Northern Rockies, a region where specialist services often require travel hundreds of kilometres from home.
