Dawson Creek - For the first time in four months, the lawn of the Provincial Building in Dawson Creek is clear of a homeless encampment, that had been situated there since September.
At the beginning of December, the province was considering evicting residents from the camp by issuing a no trespassing order.
The encampment had been set up, since close to 15 people were removed from a homeless camp on 17th Street in September.
BC’s Ministry of Citizen Services has confirmed to CJDC TV News that the ministry did not end up issuing the trespassing notice. However, all of the residents of the camp have since been moved elsewhere.
Ministry staff were on hand in the middle of December to assist with a clean-up of the camp. Garbage and other items were being loaded into a dumpster.
With the help of ministry staff, the Nawican Centre has provided residents of the camp to longer term housing.
The City of Dawson Creek had been powerless to move the camp, as it’s situated on Crown land.
At this point, it’s not clear what will happen when the temperature warms up in the spring.
