South Peace Search and Rescue is reminding backcountry enthusiasts to always be prepared, after a hiker was airlifted to hospital Sunday night.

A group was hiking on the Monkman Trail near Tumbler Ridge, when one of the hikers suffered ‘burn injuries.’ One of the group members used a ZOLEO satellite communicator to call for help.

Shortly after 7pm, 10 volunteers with the SR SAR were deployed to the scene along with a helicopter to assist with a medical response. The person was airlifted to Dawson Creek in stable condition.

“We want to extend our sincere thanks to Bailey Helicopters Ltd. who transported two of our members to the site and then flew both the individual and our initial response team back to Dawson Creek for further care and support,” said SP SAR in a Facebook post.

The public is being reminded that when heading into remote areas, having a reliable communication device can make all the difference.
