DAWSON CREEK, B.C. - A deer injured after being struck by a vehicle in downtown Dawson Creek was shot and killed by RCMP late Sunday night.
The deer was hit by an SUV on 102 Avenue shortly after 10 p.m.
A single gunshot was later heard as officers dispatched the wounded animal.
No injuries to motorists were reported.
Wildlife collisions remain a common concern for drivers across British Columbia.
Deer account for the majority of wildlife-vehicle collisions in the province, with thousands of crashes reported each year.
Peak collision periods typically occur during the spring and fall, particularly in May and November.
RCMP note that deer are hard-hooved animals and can easily lose traction on asphalt and concrete, which can create dangerous situations for both wildlife and motorists.
Drivers who encounter a deer on the roadway are encouraged to slow down, remain alert and watch for additional animals nearby, as deer often travel in groups.
