Grande Prairie, AB - The Grande Prairie Police Service (GPPS) has formally taken over the duties of the RCMP in Grande Prairie Alberta. The transition, which began in 2024, finished over two years ahead of schedule.
Grande Prairie Mayor, Jackie Clayton says the transition marks a significant milestone.
“This transition reflects years of planning, collaboration, and commitment from many people and organizations,” said Clayton.
City staff say the decision to move to a municipal force was, in part, due to the complexity that arose from the growth Grande Prairie experienced over the last number of years.
For the last two years, the Grande Prairie Police Service says it worked with the RCMP while it worked to hire and train new staff.
The GPPS plans to employ up to 110 police officers, 27 peace officers, and more than 50 civilian support staff at full capacity.
GPPS Chief Dwayne Lakusta plans to measure his success by the confidence they earn from residents.
“As we begin this new chapter, our commitment is clear: to deliver professional policing, strengthen public trust, and work alongside our community to keep Grande Prairie safe,” said Lakusta
Police dispatch services and call-taking will be handled by the Grande Prairie’s Public Safety Communications Centre. More information on the transition can be found at gppolice.com.
