Residents of Hudson’s Hope and Fort Nelson will see their natural gas bills go down starting in April.
FortisBC is decreasing the gas rate for its customers from $2.23 to $1.66 per gigajoule (GJ). The change was approved by the British Columbia Utilities Commission (BCUC) and will take effect April 1.
Customers will see their bills decrease by about $4.15 per month, based on an average consumption of 7.5 GJ.
FortisBC says the decrease is largely due to warmer-than-normal weather experienced in recent months.
“FortisBC acquires gas at market-based prices, and factors like supply and demand, weather and economic conditions affect the price of gas in North America,” the company said.
The Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) rate for customers subscribed to the voluntary designated RNG program will also decrease from $9.23 to $8.66 per GJ.
Joe Mazza, vice-president of energy supply and resource development, says the company understands energy costs are an important part of costumers’ budgets.
“This decrease in gas rates helps ease costs for customers, and we remain focused on supporting them with practical tools and energy‑efficiency programs that make it easier to manage energy use and costs throughout the year,” Mazza said.
In addition to Hudson’s Hope and Fort Nelson, FortisBC serves Mackenzie and Prince George.
