The Fort St. John veterinarian who was found guilty of sexual assault is being allowed to continue working, despite being sentenced to house arrest.

Justin Sewell was sentenced last Friday to two years less a day for three charges, in connection to a 2007 sexual assault in Charlie Lake. Judge David Simpkin ruled that he serve those sentenced currently.

The prosecution was looking for a 4.5-year sentence that would have sent Sewell to federal prison, however he avoided jail time.

He was sentenced to house arrest instead and is being allowed to go to work at the Rivers Animal Hospital in Fort St. John.

CJDC TV News reached out to the BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) to ask if they are planning to appeal Sewell’s sentence. In a statement they said, “we are carefully reviewing the court’s Reasons for Sentence and have no comment to provide regarding those reasons.”

Sewell is back before a judge on Thursday to discuss the possibility of having to register as a sex offender.
