Fort St. John city council has approved a total project budget of $1.9 million for a new pavilion at Surerus Park.

The city said the current pavilion was aging and had to be closed in the spring.

The bathrooms no longer met standards, and temporary washrooms had to be used throughout the summer.

The new pavilion will include four gender-neutral washrooms with outdoor entrances.

In addition, it will feature storage rooms for users groups, an event rental area with a snack-counter space, and a second-floor staff break room.

The new building will be constructed south of the existing pavilion, which will be demolished once the project is completed.

The city received two compliant bids and chose Northern Legendary Construction of Fort St. john.

Council awarded nearly $1.7 million for construction, and approved an additional $232,500 from capital reserves to cover a budget shortfall.

The city had the option to have construction done early for extra costs but decided to stick to the regular timeline to keep the project within budget.

The pavilion is expected to be completed by the end of next September.

The pavilion is part of a larger upgrade plan at Sererus Park, which includes a new playground, courts for different sports, a dog park, and other improvements.
