The city of Fort St. John will host an International Overdose Awareness Day event at Festival Plaza on Sunday.
Organizer Heather Boswell said this year’s event will raise awareness in the community about the poisoned drug crisis.
“This will bring all that information to the forefront so people can see what is available and seek help if they need it,” she said.
Boswell lost her son to a fatal overdose in 2018. Since then, she has worked with a number of support groups, such as Moms Stop the Harm, to offer help people or families affected by addiction.
After Fort St. John did not host the event last year, Boswell decided to organize it in 2025.
The event opens at 10 am with displays highlighting the many groups and programs offered in the city.
The day will also feature indigenous dancers and drummers, as well as a silent candlelight vigil at 1 pm. At 4 pm, Boswell is inviting the public to a Walk to Remember for those who have died.
She said discussions about the overdose crisis and supporting the ones in need are key to healing.
“It’s important that we get together. The more of us who show strength and are louder, the more it will bring change,” said Boswell.
