FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. - More than 800 voters cast ballots during the first advance voting opportunity for Fort St. John’s 2026 General Local Election and Aquatic Facility Referendum, nearly doubling turnout from the same stage of the last municipal election.

According to the City of Fort St. John, 824 eligible voters took part in advance voting on Wednesday, compared to 415 voters during the first advance voting opportunity in 2022.

The increase represents a turnout of about five per cent of eligible voters.

City officials highlighted the strong participation as residents prepare to decide not only who will represent them on city council, but also whether to support the proposed Aquatic Facility Referendum.

Residents who did not vote during the first advance poll will still have additional opportunities to cast a ballot.

Advance voting is scheduled for October 14, while General Voting Day will take place October 17.

Voting will be held at the Fort St. John Legion, located at 10103 105 Ave., from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on both dates.

The 2026 municipal election will determine Fort St. John’s next mayor and council, while the referendum will ask voters whether they support plans related to a proposed new aquatic facility.

The higher-than-expected advance turnout suggests strong interest from residents as the city approaches election day and a decision on the future of the community’s recreational infrastructure.
