The province has announced upgrades to two schools in Fort St. John and Wonowon as part of a $29-million investment.
The upgrades add more classrooms to Dr. Kearney Middle School in Fort St. John and Wonowon Elementary School.
An expansion at Dr. Kearny Middle School began in July, adding 200 new seats and increasing student capacity to 725.
The province invested $12 million into the school to build eight new classrooms. Officials say the new space is modern, energy-efficient and includes all the amenities needed, such as washrooms and lockers.
The Wonowon Elementary School used a $17-million investment to add 20 seats and upgrade its water system. Construction started last fall and has now been completed.
The school’s capacity has increased to 95 students, and upgrades to its existing water well and filtration systems will provide students and staff with drinking water of better quality.
“Safe, modern places to learn that are close to home are essential for communities,” said Lisa Beare, BC’s Minister of Education and Child Care.
Beare added: “These new classrooms in Fort St. John and Wonowon mean more students can be supported in the North for years to come. We’re proud to invest in schools that help every child feel welcome, comfortable and ready to learn, today and into the future.”
