FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. - A Fort St. John photographer has captured first place in a province-wide wildlife photography competition.

The BC SPCA announced the winners of its 18th annual Wildlife-in-Focus Photography Contest on Friday, recognizing top images in the Backyard Habitats and Wild Settings categories.

More than 450 photos were submitted from across British Columbia, raising more than $9,400 for the BC SPCA’s Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre.

Taking top honours in the Backyard Habitats category was Heather Rolling of Fort St. John for her photograph of a fox. The image was selected as the first-place winner by contest judges.

In the Wild Settings category, first place went to Alan Milnes of Kelowna for a killer whale photograph.

According to the BC SPCA, the contest highlights both wildlife living in natural environments and the unique relationships between people and wild animals found in backyards and communities throughout the province.

“More than 450 photos were submitted celebrating B.C.’s diverse wildlife and supporting our advocacy for wild animals,” said Hailey Boehner, the BC SPCA’s wild animal welfare specialist.

The winning photographs will be featured on a limited-edition Wildlife-in-Focus trail mug and in a new collection of wildlife greeting cards sold through the BC SPCA.

The full list of winning and honourable mention photographs is available through the BC SPCA’s Wildlife-in-Focus contest.
