Fort St. John mayor extends condolences to Sikh community, loved ones of Charlie Lake victim

Fort St. John Major Lilia Hansen has shared a letter of condolences following the death of Gurkirat Manocha last Friday.

“On behalf of Fort St. John City Council, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Gurkirat Singh Manocha during this deeply difficult time,” Hansen said.

The mayor says in a statement the loss of a young life is felt far beyond those closest to them. “To everyone in Fort St. John who is grieving, please know that you are not alone and that we stand with you,” she said.

Hansen is also extending her sympathies to the Sikh community as a whole, saying she recognizes and respects Sikh values of remembrance, sangat and seva.

“These traditions offer strength, care, and connection in moments of loss, and we stand in solidarity with you as you honour Gurkirat’s life,” she said.

Police say several people were involved in an altercation at the boat ramp in Charlie Lake. Manocha was rushed to hospital by friends but succumbed to his injuries.

The 25-year-old came to Fort St. John from India to complete a business degree at Northern Lights College.

Resources are available for students and staff of the college who may need support. They include:

  • A quiet space will be available in the Atrium at the Fort St. John campus throughout the week for those who wish to gather, reflect, mourn or pray;
  • Students are encouraged to use the GuardMe Student Support Program;
  • Faculty supports are available through the Employee and Family Assistance Program.

The mayor ends her letter by encouraging residents to take care of each other during this time of grief.
