FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. - The City of Fort St. John has awarded its highest civic honour to longtime business leader and philanthropist Brian Surerus, recognizing his decades of contributions to the community.
During a special ceremony attended by family, friends, community leaders and members of council, Surerus was presented with the Freedom of the City award in recognition of a lifetime of philanthropy, entrepreneurship and dedication to community development.
Originally from Ontario, Surerus moved to Fort St. John at the age of 17 and went on to establish one of Canada’s leading pipeline construction companies.
In 1969, he founded Groundhog Enterprises, later renamed Surerus Construction and Development Ltd., growing the company from a single truck into a major employer and industry leader.
City officials said the honour reflects not only his business achievements, but also his longstanding commitment to supporting local organizations, initiatives and causes throughout the region.
The ceremony also recognized the contributions of Connie Surerus and the entire Surerus family for their ongoing community involvement.
“The Freedom of the City is the highest honour Council can bestow, and while tonight we are recognizing Brian Surerus, we are also celebrating the remarkable impact of Connie Surerus and the entire Surerus family,” said Mayor Lilia Hansen. “Their contributions have helped shape Fort St. John into the community we know today, and their legacy will continue to make a difference for generations to come.”
The Freedom of the City is the highest distinction awarded by the City of Fort St. John and is reserved for individuals or military units that have made exceptional contributions to the community.
The award requires unanimous approval from council.
For more than five decades, Surerus has remained active in both business and philanthropy in northeastern B.C., helping support projects and organizations that benefit residents across the region.
The city says the recognition reflects a legacy that has had a lasting impact on Fort St. John and surrounding communities.
