Fort St. John city council is exploring ways to address the challenge of covering the operating costs of the new proposed aquatics facility

A presentation at the latest council meeting shows the city could face a shortfall of about $4.1 million in operating costs.

The presentation shows operating costs would increase by 31 per cent compared to the current North Peace Leisure Pool.

To fill the gap, council is considering funding opportunities or regional support. The issue is further compounded by an existing bylaw in place.

Part of the operating costs of the current pool are covered by a bylaw, which could be transitioned to the new facility.

More funding from surrounding communities could be needed to make up the revenue shortfall.

Other ways to address the situation could include increasing user fees or creating a fee system that supports all recreation, arts and cultural amenities.

Revenue could also increase due to the new facility allowing for improved programming capacity.

Council is expected to explore all options in the next few months.
