Fort St. John council considers adding public question period in meetings

FSJ Council

Council in Fort St. John is considering allowing the public to ask questions near the end of council meetings.

If approved, the segment of the meeting would be called “Questions from the Media and the Public.”

City staff recommended that council take the first steps needed to move the bylaw forward.

The change would give people two minutes to ask about issues or items discussed during the meeting.

A list of restrictions would also be introduced limiting what can be asked.

The mayor would have the power to extend or shorten the question period and would also be responsible for maintaining order.

City staff said the change would increase transparency and would give the public another way to seek clarification on council decisions.
