With wildfire season just around the corner, Fort Nelson’s FireSmart and Resiliency Committee is taking proactive steps to enhance wildfire safety in the Northern Rockies region.
The committee is inviting residents to participate in a survey that will help shape future resiliency planning efforts.
The Northern Rockies Regional Municipality is reaching out to BC Hydro, requesting the utility’s involvement in a community FireSmart meeting to leverage their expertise and resources in wildfire fuel mitigation strategies.
While the severity of the upcoming fire season remains uncertain, officials stress that managing and reducing fuel loads is critical for wildfire prevention and can significantly influence fire behaviour. BC Hydro’s participation is considered essential to developing and implementing an effective mitigation strategy, according to a February letter sent by the district.
Community FireSmart meetings are held bi-weekly, with residents given a deadline of March 28 to complete the survey.
The emphasis on wildfire safety follows last year’s Parker Lake Fire, which fueled by high winds and dry conditions, forced 4,700 people to evacuate their homes.
