Fort St. John City Council presented Steve Thorlakson with the Freedom of the City Award Tuesday, in recognition of his lasting impact on the community.
Thorlakson began his public service in 1986 as an Alderman and was elected Mayor in 1990, a position he held for 15 years.
“During his tenure, he led the City through a critical financial turning point, helping transform Fort St. John into the vibrant, livable community it is today,” said the city in a statement
Thorlakson recognized the inequity of northern communities serving as essential industrial hubs while receiving limited support. Through persistent advocacy, he championed the development of the Fair Share Agreement, now known as the Peace River Agreement.
The agreement between the Province and local governments in the region provides sustainable, predictable funding to enhance infrastructure, recreation, and essential services in Fort St. John, which continues to this day.
“Steve’s leadership laid the foundation for our city’s long-term success,” said Mayor Lilia Hansen. “Because of his dedication, Fort St. John gained the financial stability to invest in roads, parks, facilities, and our overall quality of life. His impact touches every corner of our community and will be felt for generations.”
The Freedom of the City is the highest honour given by the City of Fort St. John. It is used in exceptional cases to recognize the significant contributions the recipient has made to our community. By unanimous vote, Council can award the Freedom of the City to a distinguished person or unit of the armed forces.
