Fire southwest of Chetwynd being held as wildfire season in Northeast BC ‘officially underway’

The BC Wildfire Service has declared wildfire season officially underway in Norheast BC, after a wildfire started near Highway 97 South Tuesday, 17 kilometers southwest of Chetwynd.

The BC Wildfire Service was notified of a fire just before 2:30pm that was burning out of control near Cruiser Mountain, east of Hasler Flats.

The fire grew to 7.1 hectares in size before being held 5.5 hours later. Currently 10 firefighters remain at the scene fighting the blaze. The cause of the blaze is unknown, but it’s believed to be human caused.

Since April 1st there have been 5 wildfires in Northeast BC. One other fire is still burning 37 kilometers Northwest of Dawson Creek near Willow Valley. That fire in under control.

The Wildfire Service said there are 26 fires still burning from last year, all of which are in the Fort Nelson Fire Zone.

The BC Wildfire Service is recommending that people do not burn during windy conditions. If you are going to burn, you should have ample water and tools nearby. The public is also being reminded to be aware of local fire bans and restrictions.
