Final Evacuation Alert rescinded for the Kiskatinaw River Wildfire near Kelly Lake

On Thursday around 7,000 evacuees, mostly from the La Ronge area began returning home as crews have been able to take advantage of recent rainfall and attack nearby wildfires more aggressively. (Jasmine Pelletier/CTV News)

The Peace River Regional District has cancelled the remaining Evacuation Alert for properties near the Kiskatinaw wildfire that is burning south of Dawson Creek.

The Kiskatinaw River blaze is currently being held and listed as more than 266 square kilometres in size.

The PRRD said that an Evacuation Alert or Order may need to be reissued if the wildfire situation changes or worsens. As there are no current Evacuation Alerts or Orders, the regional district has deactivated their Emergency Operations Centre.

The BC Wildfire Service says the Prince George fire centre has received up to 100 millimetres of rain and that the favourable weather has aided in the fight against the Kiskatinaw River fire.

Residents are reminded that there are Category 2 & 3 Open Fire prohibitions in place and to adhere to the prohibition. Human activity is the leading cause of spring wildfires across British Columbia.

The BC Wildfire Service still has an Area Restriction in effect, which applies to Crown Land.
