The Province of BC has thrown every available resource towards fighting the numerous wildfires in Northeast BC, that according to the MLA for Peace River South.
Nearly 70 fires are burning across B.C., including the Kiskatinaw River wildfire. Larry Neufeld said, “these aren’t isolated events anymore, they’re the new reality.”
Neufeld said the wildfire service is expecting a challenging weekend ahead concerning the fire that is threatening Kelly Lake. The fire has made it to the edge of the community. Firefighters are protecting individual homes and structures in the community, until it is no longer safe to do so.
“They have done a fantastic job. I’m very proud of them. I’m very proud of the work that’s been done to save the community, and I want to give my absolute gratitude on behalf of everyone in the South Peace to every one of those firefighters,” said Neufeld.
The MLA is also encouraging everyone who could be affected by wildfires this weekend, to “please stay safe and keep an eye on” the Peace River Regional District’s webpage for any updates on Evacuation Orders or Alerts.
The Emergency Reception Centre in Dawson Creek will be closed Saturday to process hotel renewals for evacuees. The reception centre will reopen on Sunday at City Hall, from 10am to 2pm.
The Dawson Creek ESS Team will be on site to assist with food, lodging and supply renewals for Kelly Lake and One Island Lake evacuees.
