‘Experience life again’: Tumbler Ridge shooting victim Maya Gebala now spending time outside hospital

There is encouraging news for 12-year-old Maya Gebala, who was seriously injured in the February mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge.

According to her mother, Maya has reached a major milestone in her recovery and is now able to leave the grounds if BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver to spend time outside with her family.

“Now that we can leave hospital grounds, she gets to experience life again,” her mother said.

More than four months after the shooting, Maya is also making progress with communication.

Her family says she is learning to use her iPad to answer questions and can now respond using yes and no buttons.

Her mother says she is beginning to see more of her daughter’s personality shining through as recovery continues.

She adds that Maya’s sister, Dahlia, has also found her place amid the chaos the family has faced since the shooting.
