An Evacuation Order has been issued for the Summit Lake Wildfire for the Alaska Highway corridor, west of Fort Nelson.

The Summit Lake fire has grown to 8,354 hectares in size. It’s burning out of control on the north side of the highway, 10 kilometres northeast of Summit Lake

The Evacuation Order was issued by the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality (NRRM).

The NRRM said that with the forecasted weather over the coming days, given the fire behavior, terrain of the area, and out of concern for public safety, an Evacuation Order has been issued for the Tetsa River area between Summit Lake Campground (Mile 392) and Steamboat Mountain Brake Check (Mile 333) along the Alaska Highway.

Remember to Bring

  • Take your emergency kit(s) and critical items (medicine, purse, wallet, cellphone and keys).
  • Take pets with you in kennels or on a leash.
  • Wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and sturdy shoes to help protect you from unforeseen hazards.

Prepare your Home

  • Close all windows, vents, doors and other openings in the house. Close and latch gates, but do not lock them.
  • Turn on both interior and exterior lights so your home is visible to firefighters in heavy smoke.
  • Do not shut off your natural gas. If requested by emergency officials, FortisBC will turn off natural gas. However, if you suspect a gas leak, turn off the gas valve and leave immediately.
  • If you are comfortable doing so, post a message in clear view, indicating where you are going and how you can be contacted.

While excluded from the Evacuation Order area, the Alaska Highway was closed once again late Friday afternoon due to heavy winds and increased fire activity.

An Evacuation Alert has also been extended beyond the Order area as a precaution. Residents in the Alert area should be prepared to leave on short notice
