Evacuation Alert issued for Alces River Wildfire burning south of Goodlow

The Peace River Regional District has issued an Evacuation Alert for a wildfire burning 40 kilometres northeast of Fort St. John.

Crews are continuing to battle the Alces Wildfire that out of control south of Goodlow.

Based on recommendations from BC Wildfire Service, the PRRD issued the Alert due to the potential danger to life and health.

The following area is asked to be on Alert:

  • Extending 2km South from the junctions of the 256 Rd and 211 Rd, the 256 Rd and 221 Rd.
  • From the junction of the 256 and 221 Rd North approximately 4km, covering the area East to the BC/AB border.

PRRD Alerts and Orders do not affect First Nations communities on Reserve Lands or municipalities as they issue their own

It has grown from 70 hectares in size on Thursday to 1,851 hectares Friday. It was discovered Wednesday and is thought to be caused by lightning.

The wildfire service says extreme fire behaviour is expected over the next couple of days as winds are expected to increase and the relative humidity is expected to be very low

A helicopter is dousing the fire while heavy machinery and firefighters are tackling it on the ground.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:

• Locate all family members and designate a meeting area outside the evacuation area, should an Evacuation Order be called while separated.

• Pack essential items such as government-issued ID, medications, eyeglasses, valuable papers (e.g. insurance, credit, and mortgage information), immediate care needs for dependents and, if time and space permits, keepsakes for quick departure.

• Prepare to move disabled persons, children and/or neighbours, if assistance is needed. • Prepare to take pets with you and move livestock to a safe area (if possible).

• Arrange transportation for all your household members. Fill the gas tanks of personal vehicles. If transportation assistance is needed, call 1-800-670-7773.
