Equipment being secured to work on Old Fort landslide, while residents asked to renew Emergency Services Supports

Emergency officials say movement of the landslide near the community of Old Fort continues to slow, but safety concerns remain.

According to DriveBC, movement of the slide on Old Fort Road is currently minimal, though debris continues to collect near the top of the slope, which remains a concern.

The landslide has made Old Fort Road, the only access route into the community, impassable.

The Ministry of Transportation and Transit says if slide movement continues to slow and drainage measures work as intended, crews could soon begin establishing a temporary access route into Old Fort.

In the meantime, equipment is being secured so work can begin without delays once conditions allow.

The landslide is approximately 400 metres wide and has displaced Old Fort Road by about 150 metres downslope.

Old Fort Landslide Scarp located at the west intersection of the slide and the road.

An evacuation order and alert remain in place for the area.

Residents who have been evacuated are being asked to renew their Emergency Support Services. They can do so on Wednesday at the Pomeroy Centre in Fort St. John from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and again from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Movement at the historic Old Fort landslide site was first detected on April 19. The area has experienced previous landslides, most recently in 2018 and 2020, both of which led to road closures and evacuations.
