Environment Canada has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for some communities in the South Peace Region.

Meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm 20 km south of Tumbler Ridge, along highway 52. They said it should arrive near Tumbler Ridge around 5pm.

Environment Canada described the thunderstorm as “capable of producing very strong wind gusts, up to nickel size hail and heavy rain.”

They advise people to take immediate cover if the thunderstorm approaches, or to protect yourself from flying debris and hail if outside.

The communities of Dawson Creek, Tumbler Ridge, and Chetwynd are under the warning. The city of Fort St. John is under Severe Thunderstorm Watch.

The thunderstorm warning hits the region after Environment Canada issued a heat warning Tuesday night that is expected to continue until Friday.
