One person is dead after a crane crashed into the Wapiti river just south of Grande Prairie on Tuesday.
RCMP say it happened near Grande Prairie on Tuesday, when the commercial vehicle hit a guardrail of the Wapiti River Bridge and went into the water.
At 9:10 a.m., emergency crews were notified that the commercial vehicle had gone over the Wapiti River Bridge on Highway 40.
Police, fire, and search and rescue volunteers responded to the scene.
Corp. Mathew Howell says the vehicle remains submerged and the cause of the collision is under investigation.
Howell says divers haven’t been able to go into the river, because the current is too strong.
He says police plan to use sonar technology next week in their search.

Photos shared on social media appear to show a section of the bridge’s fence completely destroyed, along with what appears to be the vehicle partially submerged in the Wapiti River.
The collision forced the closure of Highway 40 Tuesday morning.
Alberta Occupational Health and Safety confirmed Wednesday the worker had been killed, adding the incident will be investigated by federal occupational health and safety investigators.
