Dawson Creek residents facing extreme cold temperatures will now have access to extended operation of the city’s emergency warming centre.
The Nawican Friendship Centre on 102nd Avenue was initially scheduled to close its doors today, after re-opening as warming centre on January 31st.
It will now remain open around the clock providing light refreshments through February 19, 2025, for those in need of respite from the cold.
The extension of the warming centre being made possible thanks to the Nawican Friendship Centre and funding provided through The Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness (EMCR), according to the city.
“This space is here to support those in need during the colder months,” said the city in a social media post announcing the extension.
Environment Canada has issued warnings of overnight lows dropping below -20°C throughout the week.
