The Doig River First Nation is hosting a national conference in Dawson Creek this week.

Walking the Path of Justice: First Nation Court Conference 2025 is dedicated to advancing indigenous law, restorative justice and to finding community-driven solutions to Canada’s justice crisis.

“While inspired in part by ongoing efforts to establish an Indigenous court in Fort St. John, the conference is national in scope and rooted in broader questions of legal transformation and justice reform,” said the Doig River First Nation Council

Organizers say the punitive systems that have failed indigenous communities needs to be challenged. They add that solutions need to be grounded in restoration, accountability and healing.

“This conference is a call for a paradigm shift in how justice is understood and delivered in Canada. It moves beyond symbolic inclusion to recognize Indigenous legal orders as legitimate, resourced, and equal within a reformed justice system,” said the First Nations Council.

The conference is being held at the Ovintiv Event Centre and runs until Friday.
