Doig River First Nation Chief Trevor Makadahay has announced he won’t be running for Chief during the upcoming elections.
Chief Makadahay thanked the community for their support during his time in office.
He was first elected in 2014, after serving as a councillor for seven years.
“This is a time to give to my family, who have stood by me through every step of this journey,” he said.
Makadahay said he will always carry a responsibility to serve and support his Nation in any way he can.
He said his late father shared a piece of wisdom that guided him throughout his journey as chief, and it resonates even more now that he won’t seek another term: “You don’t always need to be in a position of power to lead. You can always continue to lead from wherever you are.”
The Doig River First Nation acknowledged Chief Makadahay has been committed to protecting Treaty rights while fully participating in the local economy.
He added that fresh leadership will bring new ideas and energy to support a growing path of cultural and economic prosperity. “If the nation should ever call on me again, I will be there,” he added.
The next election will take place on November 20, 2027.
