The City of Dawson Creek has proposed a new water supply system to the environmental Assessment Office (EAO).
Dawson Creek needs a new water source since the Kiskatinaw River, its current source, is experiencing urgent drought conditions.
The new project would draw water from the Peace River near Taylor and would be transport 52 km to the city in a new pipeline.
The project would also take four to six wells, a river intake, and pumping stations. It would also cross traditional territories, private land, and crown land.
The city has recently entered Stage 3 Water Conservation Measures. City officials said Dawson Creek is left with 150 days of stored water, and entering Stage 3 is crucial to make it through the winter months.
The EAO has approved the city’s initial project and has placed it into the Early Engagement phase.
The assessment office said they will consult with indigenous nations. The Minister of Environment could decide to exempt the project from a full environmental assessment if it decides the project does not have serious negative effects.
The EAO is hosting an open house on October 8, and a virtual info session on October 16, as part of the public engagement phase.
