There are only a few days left in the Stock Our Sleigh Community Food Drive in Dawson Creek.
The Rotary Club of Dawson Creek is organizing the food drive ahead of Christmas. It began on Sunday and runs through Saturday.
Organizers said the community’s generosity has been incredible so far. They expect to collect two to three times more food than last year.
“We collected one-and-a-half times what we collected in total last year, and we still have three days to go,” said volunteer Alex Reschny.
Donation bins are available at four grocery stores across town until Saturday. That includes Safeway, No Frills, Save On Foods, and Co-Op.
Reschny said food donations will be divided between St. Marks Food Bank and Networks Ministries, while toy donations will go to the Nawican Friendship Centre.
He added that the money collected will help both organizations fund Christmas food hampers, which costs $200 to $250 each to put together.
Reschny said he couldn’t be happier with the high number of donations because he has seen more demand this year.
“There are more people that need food. Hopefully, this year will be a bigger success, and we are off to a great start,” he said.
Reschny added that people who can’t afford to donate food or money can still help by volunteering.
“We always need help at the different stores. Even if you can’t donate, we always accept people who want to give their time,” he said.
Reschny said there are still volunteer spots open until Saturday, and anyone wanting to help should contact one of the participating food banks.
