Dawson Creek residents invited to take part in free radon test kit challenge

DAWSON CREEK, B.C. - Dawson Creek residents will have the opportunity to learn about the risks of radon exposure and receive a free radon test kit through a new community initiative being launched later this month.

The City of Dawson Creek, in partnership with Take Action on Radon, is inviting 100 local households to participate in the “100 Radon Test Kit Challenge.”

The program aims to encourage residents to test their homes for radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can increase the risk of lung cancer when present at elevated levels.

Radon is colourless, odourless and tasteless, meaning it cannot be detected without specialized testing.

According to information provided by the organizers, radon levels can vary significantly from one home to another, making testing the only way for homeowners to know if elevated levels are present.

As part of the challenge, residents are invited to attend a free public information session on Wednesday, October 28 at 7 p.m. at the Kiwanis Performing Arts Centre.

Organizers say the session will provide information about radon, the importance of home testing and details about how residents can participate in the challenge.

Registration for the event is free. Following the session, registered participants will receive information on how to pick up their free radon test kit during the following week.

The initiative’s goal is to distribute 100 test kits to 100 local homes as part of an effort to build a safer community through increased awareness and testing.

Residents can register for the information session through the event registration form provided by organizers.
