Residents of Dawson Creek could see a lower proposed property tax increase in 2026 than originally expected.

Dawson Creek City Council has decided on a proposed increase of 5.45 per cent.

Officials were expected to consider a 6.75 per cent tax increase as part of the second draft of the 2026 Financial Plan.

However, council settled on a lower proposed rate after learning about an increase to the annual Peace River Agreement funding.

The proposed tax rate is also lower than the one discussed during the first draft budget review. At the time, the city was considering a property tax increase of 6.5 per cent.

The second draft budget was an item of discussion at the Regular Meeting of City Council on January 26, but due to lengthy deliberations, the meeting was adjourned and reconvened two days later.

The city will review a third draft budget on March 9. In the meantime, residents can participate in the budget process by attending the annual Budget Public Consultation at City Hall on February 9.
