Dawson Creek named finalist for two sport tourism awards after hosting Para Cup

The city of Dawson Creek is receiving recognition for hosting the 2025 Para Cup in November and December.

The city has been named a finalist in two categories at the 2026 Sport Tourism Canada PRESTIGE Awards, which recognize Canada’s top sport tourism events and initiatives each year.

The first category is “International Sport Event of the Year – Group B,” for events with a budget under $2 million. The second is “Sport Event Legacy of the Year.”

The 2025 Para Cup was held from November 30 to December 6 in partnership with Hockey Canada.

“Working with Hockey Canada to bring the Para Cup to Dawson Creek was an incredible experience,” said Darcy Dober, mayor of Dawson Creek. “It showed that smaller communities can host major events and create lasting impact for athletes and fans.”

Canada’s national para ice hockey team, led by captain Tyler McGregor, lost in the final to the United States, but now have a chance to redeem themselves at the 2026 Paralympics Winter Games in Milan.

Winners will be announced on March 11 during the annual Sport Events Congress in Ontario.
