Dawson Creek mayor disappointed province won’t consider twinning Highway 2 to Alberta border

With interprovincial trade dominating national headlines since the trade war with United States started, there are renewed calls to twin Highway 2 to the Alberta border.

The Peace River Regional District sent a letter to BC’s Transportation Minister asking the province to reconsider twinning the highway for safety concerns.

The Mayor of Dawson Creek said, counties in Alberta are putting pressure on Danielle Smith’s government to do the same on the Alberta side of the border.

Darcy Dober said, “The highway can be dangerous with bumper-to-bumper traffic at times.”

Dober said the in the early 2000’s, the province had plans in place to twin the highway from Fort St. John to the border. Those plans were shelved by the Liberal government at the time.

The Transportation Ministry sent a letter back to the PRRD. Dober said the response was a ‘polite no.’

Dober said the letter from the province said, that half of the highway from Fort St. John to the border are either already twinned or have passing lanes.

A disappointed Dober disagrees with the ministry’s numbers adding, “we need to look after the safety of our residents, especially during the winter. Something needs to be done.”
