After 2 murders and a pair of drive-by shootings in just over a two-month period, the Mayor of Dawson Creek is re-assuring the public that police are doing everything they can to bring charges forward.
Mayor Darcy Dober said, “I think the messages is we hear you loud and clear. I have full faith in our RCMP, our staff sergeant, our sergeant and the team at the RCMP detachment are doing an unbelievable job.”
In January, Joel Freeman was allegedly murdered in the 1,000 block of 102nd Avenue. Days earlier, a pair of drive-by shootings took place on 119th Avenue and on 103rd Avenue.
Then in April, Emily Ogden’s body was found in Arras. CJDC TC News has reported that both murders are believed to be part of the on-going drug turf war in Dawson Creek.
“They (RCMP) can only share so much and that’s to protect their community. If they felt that there was a danger to the community, they would notify us,” said Dober
In the past 2 years, 10 people have been murdered in connection with drug war, while there has only been one charge laid. Despite that. Dober said the province and the BC RCMP have done a good job in supporting the local detachment.
Dober added, “We work very closely with them as well as North District and the province. They’re all aware of what’s going on and they’ve all stepped up. They’re all putting all their resources at it.”
The Mayor said after both a federal and provincial election, the city will again reach out to BC’s Solicitor General, Public Safety Minister and the Attorney General to keep the issue at the forefront in Victoria.
Dober also gave credit to the MLA for Peace River South. and the work that Larry Neufeld is also doing on-behalf of the community.
Dober said while there has been some improvement lately, everyone needs to keep pushing the province and Ottawa to get tough on repeat offenders.
