A notorious criminal from Dawson Creek is in jail and facing a number of weapons related charges.

RCMP say, John Ominayak was arrested on January 19th in Dawson Creek.

Just after Joel Freeman was shot to death, in the 1000 block of 102nd Avenue, a suspect was spotted running from the scene.

After the shooting, Dawson Creek RCMP flooded the downtown core with officers looking for the suspect. The Uniformed Gang Enforcement Unit spotted a man and woman dragging a wagon down the street.

As officers approached Ominayak and a woman, a third person joined the group, who fit the description of the suspect in the Freeman killing. All three suspects were arrested and taken into police custody.

Police allege that a search of Ominayak’s wagon revealed five shotguns that were wrapped up in blankets.

While none of the three suspects were charged in the Freeman murder, the BC Prosecution Service has approved charges against Ominayak, including three counts of possessing a firearm without a license or registration and three counts of possessing a firearm contrary to an order.

Last fall Ominayak spoke to the CBC’s Fifth Estate about being accused of murdering Tina Nellis, Roy Islay and Darylyn Supernant.

Ominayak said there is no proof of him doing any of that adding, he has nothing to do with anyone’s death.

Ominayak remains in jail in Prince George. He next scheduled court appearance is Wednesday.

Ominayak has not been charged in connection to the 4 homicides. None of the accusations in this story have been proven in a court of law.
