A man with a violent criminal record is now facing new charges stemming from an alleged incident while behind bars.
Freddy Ominayak had been due for release from federal prison this month after serving a five-year sentence for shooting a Dawson Creek woman in the face.
However, prosecutors say that release is now on hold.
The B.C. Prosecution Service has approved charges against Ominiyak of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon in connection with an alleged stabbing inside a federal institution in Agassiz in December 2025.

Two other individuals are also facing charges related to the same incident, though further details about their involvement have not been released.
Ominayak was originally sentenced following a 2021 shooting in Dawson Creek, in which a woman was seriously injured and later sought treatment at hospital.
Police located and arrested him at a motel in the 1700 block of Alaska Avenue without incident.
Ominayak was facing a number of charges including attempted murder. After a plea deal he sentenced for discharging a firearm with the intent to wound or disfigure and aggravated assault.
Tyrese Stonechild and Justin Berens are also faces charges in relation to the alleged stabbing in December 2025.
Ominayak’s next scheduled court appearance is June 22 for a possible bail hearing.
